Rzeźba z epoki kamienia z geometrycznymi wzorami o nazwie „Medalion” (Lepenski Vir)
Stone age sculpture with geometrical patterns named “Medallion”, carved of quartz sandstone, Lepenski vir culture, Mesolithic period, around 6300-5900 BC, found at Lepenski vir archaeological site at Boljetin-Đerdap, at the right bank of the Danube river, eastern Serbia.
Collection of National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade.
Lepenski Vir is a very important and in many ways unique prehistoric site. At this site are evident remains of settlements from different periods: the early Mesolithic period – from 9500 BC to 7500 BC (Proto Lepenski Vir); late Mesolithic, from 6300 BC to 5900 BC (Lepenski Vir Ia-e, Lepenski Vir II) and early Neolithic, 5900 BC to 5500 BC (Lepenski Vir IIIa-b).
Planned building of settlements with houses, trapezoid-base sanctuaries, necropolises indicating special burial rituals, monumental stone sculptures, and various items carved of bones and stones testify that this site was not only a settlement, but also a religious center. At the time of discovery, Lepenski Vir was an isolated phenomenon, which had not significantly changed since the Mesolithic period. Unlike other parts of Europe, where there is only scant evidence about Mesolithic, Lepenski Vir provides remains which allow a complete reconstruction of culture, art and society of that period
