@Comrade Doushkin its true. Look it up If you want. I also speak German and serbo-croatian and Berlin has No meaning in the German language.

Berlin, Dresden, Rostock, Lancken-Granitz, Burg Stargard etc all have Slavic origins. For crying out loud, Vorpommern/Pomerania translates to „By the Sea”. We Slavs consider Germans our cousins. Even if you are cold and sometimes weird, we still love you.

Brunswick in Lower Saxony has a lot of names pointing to the Wends as well. „Wendentor”, „Wendenring”, „Wendenstraße”, „Wendenmaschstraße”, „Wendentorwall”, „Wenden” the city quarter for example.

@Filip Joldzic Of course Berlin is Slavic name, the correct spelling should be Barlin, there are several similar toponims in Poland. Slavic names, both toponims and even more hydronims are very common in whole Germany, not only east Germany, but also west, not only that, hydronims which are by nature most conservative are dominant in whole Germany up to river Rhine which is Slavic „Ryn” or „Rynn” and means a running water. Slavic names are as far out as close to border with Neatherlands, e.g. the city of Kamen, pure Slavic name, also many city names are a translation from Slavic into German e.g.Bielefeld which in Slavic means Białe Pole /white field/, where second part is translation and first pure Slavic adjusted to German spelling. Also Osnabruck is a Slavic name with German second part, although its true origin is deliberately being lied up.

12 hours ago@Lechosław Berlin comes from the old „Czech” word Berlen, which literally means crutch, however it really was meant something like banister , which people could hold on to walk trough dangerous swamp safely. Area of Berlin was swampy in old land.

@Peter Jakes For me more likely is that Berlin name comes from „barło” which is a name of grass growing often in swamps. There is a Polish name „barłóg” which means a messy place where some animals use to sleep, it often is being used for sloppy people. I’ve once heard Russian linguist who said that origin of this comes to forgotten Slavic name of bear /bar/ which was similar to present English name, so „barłóg” originally meant place where a bear spent winter. I’ve seen one Sorb page where this city is called Barlin. A few years ago I drove side roads south of Berlin and I noticed some street sigs „Barlinska Droga” in Sorb language which obviously confirms original name of that city is Barlin. – https://dsb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barliń

4 hours ago@Lechosław бърлога means exactly the same in Bulgarian. A place where a wild animal spends the winter. It may also mean an animal barn, but it is not so wildly used.
